5 Small Steps to a Healthier Community

You don't need to be a doctor or policymaker to improve community health. Small actions add up. Here are some ways you can make a difference.

1. Know Where to Find Help

Save the number for a free mental health hotline or local clinic. You never know when you—or someone you know—might need it. Across the U.S. and Canada, trained 211 Community Resource Specialists can connect you 24/7 to locally available help for counseling, treatment, or long-term mental health. All conversations are confidential and anonymous, and available in 180 languages. Click here to find your local 211. Outside the U.S. and Canada, connect with your local United Way to learn more about what’s available.

2. Shop or donate locally

Supporting local farmers’ markets and donating to food banks helps fight hunger and keeps fresh food accessible in your community. Around the world, United Ways like United Way of New York City partner with community food banks to make sure that no child goes to bed hungry. Learn more about their work here.

3. Check-in on one person this week

The U.S. Surgeon General declared a loneliness epidemic in the United States in 2023, saying that social isolation can increase the risk of premature death by 29%. A quick text or call can make a difference in someone’s mental health.

4. Move your body

A daily walk, stretching, or dancing in your kitchen can boost physical and mental health. A quick shuffle has the potential to elevate your mood, reduce stress, and improve cognitive function.

5. Speak up for clean air and safe spaces

Find out what’s happening in your community to support cleaner neighborhoods, better parks, and safer streets. In Latin America, United Ways are transforming urban spaces to improve the childhood experience of thousands of residents. Whether it’s advocacy or volunteering, find out what opportunities are available through your local United Way. Locate your local United Way here, and follow them on social media to learn more.
